MjuzNews intervju: Les Yeux Orange (SRB i ENG)

R: Les Yeux Orange – Pacifico

Alan Dente – Desert Road

Budi iskren.

MN: Sva trojica ste bili u Beogradu i posetili 20/44 i Drugstore.

R: Stan Humangigz radi grafiku.

R: Da, dobijamo puno demoa dnevno. Bili smo zapanjeni kvalitetom zvuka, dinamikom i densflor potencijalom.

n.stal – Entre Les Etoiles

Hajde da kažem “Pineapples – Come On Closer”.

MN: Ciao, Raphael! Please provide a link for some tune to set up the mood for this interview:

R: Les Yeux Orange – Pacifico

MN: LYO started as a YouTube channel in 2013 with a wish to share music which was either new or not already uploaded on YT. In addition to that you’ve had this wish of starting a label for a long time. Now that you’re there, do you find time to enjoy it?

R: To Enjoy having a label ? well it's a small achievement so we're really happy we did it but finally it's more pressure on our shoulders because it's a lot of work and we want to make a mark. In addition it's really hard to survive for most of the young new labels as the competition is fierce and the market over saturated.

MN: There are three of you but you usually perform abroad in pairs. Who is coming to Belgrade?

R: Me & Camille, aka Alan Dente, who is a producer and made a nice debut 12" last year on Bordello a Parigi as well as a track on Red Laser.

MN: You are playing at 20/44, one of the best clubs in Europe according to The Guardian, Belgraders with taste and lucky tourists who had the chance to bust a move on the red dance floor, this Saturday. How excited are you from 1 to 100? We know you so be honest.

R: Haha let's say 90. We had to chance to play quite a lot those last 12 months and had dope ones in some terrific clubs. This one is special to me because some very good friend of mine is setting up the party and because i love Belgrade and of course as it happens that i have some serbian blood from my grand mother ! Adding that we play with Slobodan Brkic who i respect a lot is the icing on the cherry.

MN: The story goes that on your first trip to Belgrade you listened to Brka’s mix, arrived in Belgrade, told Bagheera your friend and host that you felt inspired and would love to hear Brka play sometimes. Your wish came true an hour later at Kc Grad where Brka was playing alongside other local legends like Vlada Janjić and Gordan Paunović. The same year you invited Brka to provide a mix for your series among first DJs. What is it that Brka has that earned him the worldwide reputation among the disco and balearic elite according to what you heard from his selections?

R: Well to be completely accurate, i listened to a Brka's mix while in Montenegro heading towards Zabljak from Kotor. It was a recommendation from Vladimir Ivkovic who i don't know that much but i who still know for many many years, long before he was that established dj he is now. It's hard to answer precisely your question. I think Slobodan has this completely eclectic taste and love for music that you can feel in hearing all his diverses mixes and selections. "East of Cosmic" was the ideal soundtrack for this drive along the fjords of Kotor progressively rushing to the Durmitor national Park fitting perfectly my inner ethereal dreaming thoughts.

MN: All three of you were in Belgrade and visited both 20/44 and Drugstore. If you were booked for Drugstore, would you pack different records? What is it you know about these places?

R: I haven't been personally to the new location of Drugstore but it seems much more of an industrial and techno place than the boat to me. The set up, built like a huge indus catedral seems a place where the groove is less important than the acoustic. I would definitely bring more ebm, techno or electro than in 20/44. 20/44 is intimate, that's the kind of places where you want to see dj communicate more with the crowd, i think it's a place to play more sensual stuffs. All this sounds very binary tho. haha you just have to find the good balance of course.

MN: Your graphics are solid. That always helps, sets up a certain authority among followers if well executed like in your case. Who is in charge of that?

R: Stan aka Humangigz does. He has really a personal vision and we really like his artwork. I would be even happier if he would work faster sometimes but you have to let the artists play by their rules if you wanna have some beauties i guess!

MN: As bosses of two labels you get plenty of material from aspiring artists around the globe. Our guess is that most of it is rubbish. What is different about Wav Fuzz and n.stal who released their stuff on the LYO label? What got your attention?

R: Yes we receive plenty of demos on a daily basis. Huge majority sucks big time as you guessed it right and i don't even understand how those people can be confident enough daring sending such stuffs. Some of it are really ok tho but most of the time really lacks inspiration & originality. Wav Fuzz was a soundcloud discovery by one of our friend. We got caught immediately by the title track of the ep while completely drunk on a listening session in the countryside. Then he sent us a big bulk of unsigned very different tracks and we loved a lot of them. n.stal is a young local that sent us on a very long period lot of different demos. We were amazed by the quality of the sound, the dynamic on it and the dancefloor potential. With those two artists and two first releases we wanted to give full "carte blanche" to completely unknown producers instead of being the 25th of some established biased guy. We could as well sign a newcomer featuring a big name on the remix but we felt this was lazy and showing no balls or guts either.

MN: Your love for Serbia and the ex-Yu region is well known to friends in real life and cyberspace. Tell more about your Šantić roots to our readers.

R: It happens that A.Santic is my great great grand father. I was never been hugely cultivated by those roots because my gd mother arrived in france when she was a very young girl and then totally assimilated as a french people. When she died tho, i felt a bit of frustration not knowing her and those roots enough and began to read intensively about Yugoslavian history and hopped suddenly on a month travelling there to experiment more about this heritage lying in my veins.

MN: The word on the streets is that you earned another residency in Paris. You are currently residents of Rotonde Stalingrad. Tell us more about that club.

R: La Rotonde is our HQ for two years now. We made more than 15 parties there who immediately had a buzz. La Rotonde in itself is a splendor of monument classified building and the place is quite big. Most of the parties we do there are held into an intimate room aptly called "Miniclub" and is of a very limited capacity of 150 persons but with a big outside smoking area. We almost always had a terrific mixed crowd there, young, but open minded and always loving our music and our guests so we love  that place indeed.

MN: Where do most interesting invitations to play come from?

R: Unfortunately huge majority of them come from northern europe. Southern countries wouldn't dare to bring underground names to their parties. Either they bring big fishes, the ones you see in 85 festivals all year through, either they have residents, no spots lefts in between. I can understand there is economical issues but many times it's also a cultural problem. Recently we had a super cool time in Kaiku, Helsinki which is a top notch club on every levels.

MN: A lonely girl is sitting at home in Belgrade, thinking about cancelling the plans and not going to the party. Make her change her mind and put that red dress on with a song. Which song is it?

R: Uff tough one. I think i could stay one month on that question. Let's say "Pineapples - Come On Closer" it never fails. It might sounds cheesy to many but i never saw anyone not dancing or havinga huge smile when this stuffs drops in. The crooner voice of Douglas Roop is an instant win.
